Golfing the High Seas
During the war on Iraq, a Navy vessel wasn't the most comfortable place to be.
Off-hours below decks weren't exactly an arena of activity, particularly if you were a frustrated golfer.
Jason Carver, of the USS Iwo Jima was a member of that group, but to the delight of he and his shipmates, he decided to do something about it.
"He sent us an email telling us how he read about GOLO," explained GOLO national sales manager Gregg Houlgate.
"He wondered if we could send him a few games so that he and his buddies could pass the time.
We were happy to do anything we could for those guys, so we went them some games."
It's not real golf on plush fairways and speedy greens, but to Carver and his shipmates it might have been even better.
Shortly after receiving the games, he sent another email to the company.
"He explained that everyone loved the games we sent," said Houlgate.
"He even set up a match play tournament with a 12-man field."
GOLO is a game played with nine dice. There are five white dice denoting par 4's, two red dice denoting par 3's, and two blue dice denoting par 5's.
Each side has a number that correlates to the roller's score.
One or more dice have to be used in each roll.
The player may think he's going low, but the last roll for the nine might be for as much as five strokes over par.
GOLO is a product of Front9 Inc. in Los Gatos, CA.
